Why I carry a pocket knife

No it is not to keep off the zombie hoards or a SHTF scenario. Although, I can defend myself very well if needed.
No, I do not carry because it is a handy tool, which it is. The reason why I carry a pocket knife, every day 24/7 is because of a story posted on GIM almost three years ago. I cannot find it, or I would post it. A GIMmer posted a story regarding a friend of his who had a tragic accident. The story is a family (Dad, Mom and three kids) took their sailboat to a lake in Idaho (I did not know one could sail in Idaho). On one of the trips it was the Father and his 3 year old son (my girl was the same age at the time) were sailing while Mom was ashore with the other kids. Dad was good as both had life jackets on. A freak wind gust came off the mountain, hitting the boat crossways, tipping it over keel up. The boy and his Dad were ejected. Remember they both we wearing life jackets. Some how the ships rigging was able to wrap itself around the boy's leg dragging him under. Dad frantically tried to unwrap his boy but could not. The last words Dad heard from his boy were, "Daddy, I'm scared!" Dad had to let go of his boy and pop back to the surface - he had a wife and two kids ashore. If Dad had a pocket knife, the event would have been scary and not tragic. After reading that story, I began carrying every day. I never want those words to be the last I hear from my little girl! Today, I carry a Benchmade (pic below) as my EDC. I have placed cheap, disposable knives in all of my coat vest pockets and a knife in the center console of every car. Sometimes I have 3 knives handy. You never know when it will be necessary to save someone's life. The Great Ag |

Great Post!
I always carry a pocket knife (Spiderco Delica) as well. It is re-assuring there, in my front pocket. It always seems to come in handy... |

Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
i heard a similar story about diving, someone getting caught in fishing line.
the guy that told me the story would not have been alive to tell me the story if he didn't have a diving knife on his ankle. he was out in the kelp beds and got caught about 15 feet underwater in a mess/tangle of fishing line. had to stay calm & cut himself loose or ... that would have been it. |
Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
I carry the knife tomD recommended a few months ago
with the gold handle. |
Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
knives and boats go together...
I always have a knife where i can grab it in a hurry on any boat either on me or at the stern. Its particularly required when anchoring up when halibut fishing offshore due to the extreme tidal action of cook inlet if your anchor line fouls by catching on the prop(s) when the tide changes direction its pretty much the same effect as anchoring from the stern. Anchoring from the stern can suck your boat right under and flip if the tidal current is strong enough and yeah it happens once in a while by someone that didn't know better. If you can't free your anchor line in time ya gotta cut it.... |
Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
I always have my favorite knife, the Blackhawk! Hornet 2. It's easy to get to with the pocket clip, easy to open with one hand with the thumb button and is a great, versatile knife. It's also compact enough not to be uncomfortable.

Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
I haven`t crossed my doorstep without a knife in my pocket since I was 7. This includes 5 minutes ago when I took the trash out, the chute is about 5-6 steps from my appt door.On the street I carry at least 2. I also dabble in knifemaking and have a decent-size custom and some production knives. I`m certain I can recognize the make of and correctly price about 99% of the knives I see. It`s a lifelong addiction for me.
My advice is: carry only fixed blades and carbon steel. No mechanical parts to fail, zero time from drawing to the "open" position and good carbon steel is MUCH stronger and sharper. Use something like D2 when in water,it`s semi-stainless and won`t rust right away. |
Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
I always carry at least two knives. I use two knives that are good for different things and I take into account which ones are best for right or left pocket.
My left pocket knife hardly ever changes. Spyderco Harpy with G-10 handles. That serrated hawksbill shape is just too useful for cutting rope or old water hoses, etc. My favorite right side knife is a Spyderco Caly 3. VG-10 steel, plain edge, G-10. Before I got it, the earlier Spyderco Lightweight Calypso was there. If I'm going out to work on the farm and may end up abusing my knife in some way, I'll switch to the Spydero FRN Native. This is the version of the Native that Wal-Mart used to sell for $38. CPMS30V and made in Boulder, CO for $38. Amazing! Spyderco's flagship model is the full size, fully serrated Military. I keep one in my bug out bag. And I carry the other one if I'm going out in the woods to use a chain saw. The Military's nickname is "the folding chain saw" and it has definitely cut some stuff around my property that a folding knife has no business cutting! Gregg |
Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
My SOG Twitch II goes everywhere with me. Ultra-sharp, and easy to open with one hand. However, I attached coarse velcro to both sides (and removed the belt clip) so I could get a better grip on it -- the sides are kind of slick.

Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
I realise this is a thread about the merits of carrying a knife in case it becomes a life-saver, but....
You guys seem to have it lucky, being allowed to carry knives or guns for protection etc. Here in the UK, we'd probably get arrested if caught carrying anything like this! Anyone recall the story of Tony Martin who defended himself and his property against burglers? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/3011877.stm And the latest one... apparently you can't even wave a knife at someone in a threatening manner through your own window... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8451369.stm Seriously, it's no wonder society is the way it is! I bet less crimes would be committed if the criminals knew their victims were allowed to protect themselves by any means necessary. |

Something else to think about, as I have due to where I live.
Those little 15-30 minute scuba tank things. I live in a city with a ton of bridges and you hear about people going over the side all the time. I've thought about getting one of those, as well as a knife/window breaker and something to pull me back to the surface. |

One thing that threatens this ideology is the influx of foreigners on our coasts/borders in major population centers. These newcomers don't understand the do-it-yourself mindset that made our country great. Ever see Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? "I'm British! I know how to que!" Meanwhile the GWB character just walks past everyone and does things his own way. You will never see true Americans disarmed. They may try, but it would be a bloody mess. |
Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
Anyone else carry a multiplier? I carry a SOG multi plier, actually i need to get a new one, mine is rusted up pretty bad. I guess from being around salt water all day.

Nope...nossirree...no knives here. Never saw the need for them. Move along...no knives to see here.
Now finely crafted pieces of steel, on the other hand.... |

As far as I'm concerned the most dangerous part (of shore diving) is the entry and exit. So usually my wife and I will go in together, then part ways once we have descended. Then have a set time where we would ascend and meet up at the surface to exit together. Even when diving "together" we would just pick a general direction and often lose sight of each other for 10minutes at a time.... |

Edit: and to stay ontopic, always gotta have a diveknife. If a ferocious shark appears, how else are you gonna get them to go after your "buddy" instead of yourself, other than drawing a bit of blood? |

Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
I honestly don't remember when I started carrying a pocket knife but I think I must have been right around 5-6 years old. I do not go anywhere without one attached to me. I also keep a multi-plier in my vehicle. I use a fixed blade titanium knife when diving. I prefer folding half-serrated 3.5" blades for pocket carry. I have an affinity for Gerber knives although I will soon be getting a Kershaw (possibly a Spyderco instead?).
I use my pocket knife countless times a day to open boxes, cut cords, scrape gunk, cut plastic, etc. etc. People constantly need a knife and I produce it. I don't really understand why everyone does not carry a knife. |

Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
After reading this thread, went out and bought knives to put in all our vehicles, got a little girl that is only 2, all I would need is something to happen and the car seat straps get stuck and not be able to get her out. Thanks for the info guys!

Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
Have carried one of my Carl Schlieper stag handled
Eye brand lock blades for over 40 years, in a pocket. And a leather man on my belt, from when they first came out with them. |
Re: Why I carry a pocket knife
What about box cutters?
Seriously! (even though it's kinda funny). They work, they're disposable, and they're cheap. Particularly useful for land-based city-dwellers who don't have to deal with water-sharks and fishing lines. Whatcha think? |
